1. Northeastern Utilities Seek to Import Hydroelectricity From Canada

In a petition submitted last week, two utilities in New England have requested FERC to approve construction of a transmission tie line connecting New England with the Hydro-Québec system in Canada.

2. FERC Approves First Ever In-river Hydrokinetic Project in the US

Through a license amendment to an existing project, the FERC has approved installation of hydrokinetic turbines at the Mississippi Lock and Dam Project #2 in Hastings, Minnesota.

3. Utility in PA Withdraws Plans to Expand Hydroproject

The $440 million price tag to expand the Holtwood hydropower project has forced PPL to withdraw its application filed last year to increase capacity at the existing project.

4. Twin Cities Hydro Project Seeks LIHI Certification

The twin cities hydropower project located at the Mississippi Lock and Dam No. 1 (P-362) in St. Paul, MN is seeking to be certified as a low-impact project under the Low Impact Hydropower Institute's (LIHI) certification criteria.

Check out this new book on public participation. Federal agencies have taken steps to include the public in a wide range of environmental decisions. Although some form of public participation is often required by law, agencies usually have broad discretion about the extent of that involvement.
