Putting water, wildlife, and people back in rivers
The Snohomish County PUD No. 1 in Washington has further advanced in its intent to build and operate a tidal energy project in the Admirarty Inlet. Earlier this week, the PUD filed its draft license application with FERC.
Yesterday, FERC issued a new 30-year license to American Electric Power (AEP), a subsidiary of Appalachian Power Company, for continued operation of the 636 MW Smith Mountain Project.
However the new license will be effective only after the current license expires on March 31, 2010.
Clark Canyon Hydro has received a new original license to add hydropower to an existing dam on the Beaverhead river in Beaver County, Montana.
The US House passed a bill earlier this week to allow six more years to start construction for developing hydropower at Melvin Price Lock and Dam on the Mississippi River in Alton, IL.
The legislation HR 2938 introduced by Rep. Jerry Costello, D- Belleville keeps the Federal Energy Regulatory Agency (FERC) from terminating the license and gives the licensee a maximum of six years to start construction at the Price Dam Hydroelectric Project (P-12187). The US Senate still needs to act on the measure before the extension is officially allowed.
