American Rivers Accepting River Restoration Proposals

American Rivers recently announced the opening of the American Rivers-NOAA grant for 2009 for river restoration projects. According to American Rivers, since 2001, this partnership has provided technical and financial assistance to community based projects that aim to restore fish species by removal of stream barriers such as dams.

Grant proposals will be accepted for projects in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Northwest and California only.

The deadline for submitting applications is December 3, 2008.

FERC terminates a hydro license after 14 years of in-operation

After 14 years of in-operation, FERC has terminated the license for Appleton Trust Hydropower Project (P-9300) on the Hamilton Canal in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. The project, when it was operational before November 1994, had the capacity to produce 346 kW.According to FERC, the project needed major repairs to resume operation and it had asked the licensee to perform the repairs and resume operations.

FERC issues a license for Santa Felicia project in California

FERC issued a 40-year license today to United Water Conservation District for operation of Santa Felicia hydroelectric project in Ventura County, CA.Although the project boundary contains endangered and threatened species such as Southern California steelhead, Santa Ana sucker. Southwestern Arroyo toad, and California red legged frog, it was determined that the project would only affect Southern California steelhead.
